History of Word War II
WWII Historical Tourist Attractions (Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand)
Key sites that tell the painful history of the war and the construction of the "Death Railway" built by prisoners of war (POWs) and forced laborers:
• The Bridge over the River Kwai: A famous symbol of WWII. This bridge across the Khwae Yai River was built by Allied POWs. Today, visitors can walk across it or ride a train over it.
• Death Railway: A strategic railway route built by the Japanese military to connect to Myanmar (Burma). It was built under brutal, grueling conditions, causing thousands of deaths. The most famous section carved into a cliffside is Krasae Cave.
• Hellfire Pass: A mountain cutting where POWs had to carve through solid rock by hand, day and night, using simple tools like hammers and chisels. Today, it features a moving memorial museum and a nature walking trail.
• Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don-Rak): A large, peaceful cemetery in downtown Kanchanaburi containing the graves of 6,982 Allied POWs who died during the railway’s construction.
• Chong Kai War Cemetery: Another Allied war cemetery located right by the River Kwai, holding the graves of about 1,750 POWs. It offers a quiet, serene atmosphere.
• JEATH War Museum: A museum displaying photographs, replica prison huts, and actual belongings of POWs from WWII, preserving the history for future generations.
