1. Songkran Festival (Thai New Year)

Details: The Thai New Year festival featuring traditional merits, pouring water on Buddha images, paying respects to elders, and joyful water-splashing to wash away bad luck.

Popularity: Highly popular nationwide and world-famous (recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage).

Timing: April 13th – 15th every year.

2. Loy Krathong Festival

Details: Floating a small, decorated basket (krathong made of banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense) on a river to pay respect to the Goddess of Water and wash away bad luck.

Popularity: Widely celebrated across the country, especially in major locations like Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.

Timing: The full moon night of the 12th lunar month (usually in November).

3. Yi Peng Festival (Lantern Festival)

Details: A Lanna tradition of releasing glowing sky lanterns (khom loi) into the night sky to worship the Buddha and drive away bad luck, along with colorful lantern decorations.

Popularity: A unique signature event of Northern Thailand, drawing many tourists, especially in Chiang Mai.

Timing: Coincides with Loy Krathong day.

Details: Thailand’s unique greeting and sign of respect using a prayer-like hand gesture (wai) combined with a warm, friendly smile, reflecting humility.

Popularity: Practiced daily as part of the national culture, earning Thailand the affectionate nickname "The Land of Smiles."

Timing: Practiced at all times.

5. Phi Ta Khon Festival (Ghost Festival)

Details: A colorful local merit-making festival where participants wear elaborate, scary ghost masks (made from rice steamers) and vibrant costumes, dancing happily in a street parade.

Popularity: A distinctive local tradition that attracts numerous domestic and international tourists to Dan Sai District, Loei Province.

Timing: Held annually around June or July (as part of the local Bun Luang festival).

6. Bun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival)

Details: An ancient rain-calling tradition in Isan (Northeastern Thailand) where large homemade rockets (bang fai) are launched into the sky to ask the rain god (Phaya Thaen) for abundant rainfall for farming.

Popularity: Celebrated on a grand scale across the Northeast, especially famous in Yasothon Province.

Timing: May every year (at the beginning of the rice-farming season).

7. Rap Bua / Yon Dok Bua (Lotus Flower-Dropping Festival)

Details: A unique local tradition in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan Province, where locals row boats and toss lotus flowers into a boat carrying a replica of the revered Luang Pho To Buddha statue for good luck.

Popularity: A famous local cultural event with large crowds participating every year.

Timing: Around the end of the Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa, usually in October).
